China Mobile

Industry sector: Telecommunications

Headquarters: Beijing

Founded in 1997 as China Telecom (Hong Kong), communications heavyweight China Mobile has captured the lion’s share of the country’s mobile services sector (about two-thirds, by some estimates), and also boasts operations in Hong Kong and Pakistan. It has attracted a diverse and loyal customer base – including many subscribers in China’s far-flung rural regions – by developing a broad portfolio of brands; this branding strategy in turn is underpinned by a sophisticated rights protection and management system. China Mobile’s contribution to home-grown 3G standard TD-SCDMA is just one example of its commitment to intellectual property.
