Originally a state-owned enterprise called Korea Telecom, KT Corporation changed its name and began the privatisation process in 2001. The company now enjoys a strong position in the domestic wireless and broadband internet markets. In 2016 KDB Infra IP Capital ‒ a patent fund set up by two state-owned banks – made its first deal with KT. The fund reportedly acquired 100 patents related to the HEVC or H.265 video coding standard at a price between $8 million and $11 million. The company has also transferred patents to Korea’s first sovereign patent fund, Intellectual Discovery. It also appears to have sold patents to others – one US patent that KT assigned to an apparent non-practising entity was asserted 10 times in 2014 and 2015, with several of the cases having been settled since then.
